I’ve included a nice picture of the box up top, for those that get as excited about packaging as I do.

This photograph shows everything included inside the box.

PlayStation 4 Camera

The PS4 camera is required to use PSVR.  The camera is used for head tracking, so the PlayStation can work out which way you are facing.  It’s also used to track PS Move controllers if they are being used.

The camera does not come with PSVR and needs to be bought separately.

Sound

PlayStation VR features 3D sound.  I am very curious about how this works and may write about what I have learnt another time.

PlayStation VR comes with a pair of inner ear headphones, so you don’t need to buy anything extra to deal with the sound.  However, many people (myself included) were not too thrilled at the prospect of using in ear headphones.  Imagine sharing them with your buddies when you want to show them PSVR?  Yack.

It was later confirmed by Shuhei Yoshida that any pair of headphones with a 3.5mm stereo jack will do the job.  Including the PlayStation Wireless Gold headphones (breathe a deep sigh of relief).

I wondered if this would have any impact of the ability of PSVR to produce 3D sound.  So I asked Mr. Yoshida:

Pricing

Pricing has been confirmed at GDC to be £349 in the UK, €399 in Europe and 44,980 yen or $399 USD outside of Europe.

360 video of the annoucment by Eji Warp.

This official video was released shortly afterwards:

It costs $499.99 for the bundle with two move controllers and the PS4 camera.  There are no official bundles in the UK.  ShopTo was the first to make their own, though last time I checked it saved a whopping 8p off RRP.  Although certainly cheaper to buy seperately.

Pre-ordering

Amazon appears to be the only company that is not taking limitless pre-orders.  On March 16th 2016 when pre-orders went live 5 minutes early, opening at 10:55am.

Shorty afterwards they stated:

Due to limited stock we are only able to offer one unit per customer per address. We do not currently have a release date for this product. Based on our initial allocation we cannot guarantee release day delivery if you ordered after 11:45 GMT, Wednesday 16 March, 2016. You will be notified via email of the expected delivery date closer to the time

Amazon has since changed the message to:

Due to limited stock we are only able to offer one unit per customer per address. We do not currently have a release date for this product. Based on our initial allocation we cannot guarantee release day delivery. You will be notified via email of the expected delivery date closer to the time. We will be fulfilling customer orders in the order in which they were placed. This product comes with a UK plug and therefore may not be suitable for use outside of the UK.

So it appears they sold out their entire allocation of PSVR units in 50 minutes.  Not quite the 5 or 10 some other websites claim.

Getting one for release day seems iffy now, but it is unknown if Sony will produce more units to meet demand.

All the other UK shops selling PSVR are still taking pre-orders.  Though GAME has been threatening they are just about to sell out since the very first day they went on pre-sale.

Initially the Sony website said it would only be available through GAME and Amazon, but there appear to be more retailers selling it now.  Possibly why Amazon was so popular, as they have mess up so many pre-orders for so many people, many wouldn’t touch them with yours.

I have made a list of retailers I know of over here with more information about pre-ordering. Ordered by name (written on 06/04/2016 onwards).

Release Date

No release date has been confirmed at timing of writing.  All we have been told so far is October.  I will keep you posted!

When I pre-ordered, originally it said it would be delivered between the 5 – 7th of October.  This date dropped off the order later on and was replace with the message:

Delivery estimate: We need a little more time to provide you with a good estimate. We’ll notify you via e-mail as soon as we have an estimated delivery date.

October is somewhat later than the other mainstream VR headsets are being release.  Given that both of them are now being delayed due to ‘unforeseen shortages of components’, perhaps they was a wise move.  Before delays with Oculus and Vive even happened Andrew House president of SCE (now SIE) stated:

To make sure that we are able to prepare and deliver enough units of PS VR and a wide variety of software titles to consumers worldwide, we have decided to launch PS VR in October 2016.  For those who are looking forward to its launch, we would like to thank everyone for their patience and continued support.  We are beyond excited to deliver to consumers the amazing experience that PS VR offers.

Games and Developers

A list of confirmed PSVR games can be found here on Reddit.

So far there are 230 developers and publishers confirmed to be making games for PSVR.  Though I do not  believe all of these are exclusive to Sony and a good percentage will be working on multi-platform titles.

In March 2016, there were currently 160 PSVR titles in development.  With this number expected to grow!
